EXCERPT FROM NATUREBOY
The thunder was really booming now, and I could feel the electricity in the air each time a lightning bolt charged down from the sky. It felt like static cling brushing up against the hair on my arms. I knew it was dangerous to continue forward, but I couldn’t help myself. I was overwhelmed with curiosity.
I crept even closer, closer than I should have, closer than anyone should have. Rex started whining. He didn’t want to go. He was scooting his bottom across the ground with his tail between his legs. He knew something was about to happen. I figured he was just freaked out because of the lightning, but I was wrong. Dead wrong. I stared at the glowing blue crystals only about 25 feet away from me. They were sitting inside a hole that had a skid mark in the ground leading up to them. They must have been meteorites. While mesmerized by the blue rocks, everything suddenly grew quiet. The thunder seemed to have vanished. I looked up. Dark clouds that looked like sinister hands were descending down upon me. Suddenly, piercing the thick mist, at least three or four different lightning bolts came screaming down from the sky, plowing their way into the ground by my feet. A split second later I heard an earth-shattering boom, louder than anything I had ever heard before. Right after the huge clap of thunder it happened. The lightning finally reached its targets: the blue crystals. Instantly, the rocks disintegrated, which caused a huge ball of blue smoke to engulf Rex and me. I started choking and coughing. I couldn’t breath. I grabbed at my throat and gasped for air. Rex whined and spun around, scampering back to the house. I tried to follow but blindly stumbled in the field and collapsed. Everything went black.
